Flu Season - Don't Let it Get You Down
What is the latest on the flu shot? Last year there was a shortage and this year it is slowly being released. The peak time to get the shot is now, so that you have a good six weeks to build up anti-bodies before the flu starts really circulating.
The questions most asked is..”Should I get the flu shot?” If you have a reasonably healthy immune system, the answer is usually no. If you have a weakened immune system the answer is yes.
Then the next question that follows....”What alternative do you have for the shot? We do carry products by Heel.
Heel Products are a line of homeopathic remedies with a protocol for flu. Engystol is a group of homeopathics designed to stimulate a non-specific defense system in viral infections, including influenza, cold sores and feverish conditions. As with a majority of Heel products, Engystol is a sublingual tablet that simply dissolves under the tongue. The protocol designed by the company is to simply take 2 tablets per the first five days of each month during the flu months. The only contraindication is for those who are lactose intolerant.
The next product in the protocol is Gripp-Heel that includes different homeopathics that help with the temporary relief of symptoms of influenza, including fever, malaise, body aches and painful joints. Simply take 2 tablets per day for the first five days of each month during the flu months. The only contraindication is for those who are lactose intolerant.
The final product is a nasal spray called Sinusin. It’s designed to help with the temporary relief of nasal congestion, runny nose, rhinitis, sinusitis, dry nasal membranes, cold and flu symptoms. It provides 3 - 4 hours of protection and should be done 3 - 4 times per day.
Should you develop flu-like symptoms, Heel's product Lymphomyosot will help with the lymphatic system.

Healthy Fertility and Endocrine Function
by Biogenesis
Infertility is defined as the inability of a couple to conceive or a woman who is unable to carry a baby to full term. Worldwide, it is estimated that one in seven couples will struggle with this often devastating issue. While there are many physiological abnormalities that can disrupt fertility, nutritional imbalances are one of the most evident
underlying causes of reproductive problems. Numerous studies continue to point to nutrition and weight management as a central component of supporting fertility. Although there are no specific foods
that will make humans more fertile, balanced macro/micronutrient intake is essential for supporting hormone development and other biological processes involved in reproductive activity. Adequate intake of all
of the essential nutrients is also crucial to ensure a healthy and nurturing environment for the developing fetus. As natural healthcare practitioners, you can support your patients by guiding them through dietary
recommendations that enhance natural reproductive
processes. This month at BioGenesis, we will focus on
nutritional support and nutraceutical therapies to support
healthy reproduction and pregnancy.
Supporting Hormone Balance: Encouraging proper
nutrition can help support balanced hormone levels as
hormonal irregularities are one of the major culprits
behind many infertility cases. Increasing intake of
essential fatty acids, such as eicospaentaenoic and
docosahexaenoic acid, can promote healthy hormone
production and encourage healthy neurological
development in the fetus. In contrast, ingestion of
unhealthy fats, such as trans fat, has been correlated with
anovulatory infertility. Couples who are looking to
conceive should avoid highly processed foods and fast
foods that are likely to contain hydrogenated oils. In
addition, it may be beneficial to encourage patients to
increase intake of B vitamins such as pyridoxine,
pantothenate, riboflavin, and niacin, as these
micronutrients are involved in endogenous hormone
production pathways.
In women, overabundance of the hormone prolactin
(hyperprolactinemia) can also be a hormonal cause of
infertility. Prolactin (PRL) is released during pregnancy and
post-childbirth to stimulate milk production in the
mammary glands. This hormone has inhibitory effects
on both follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and is believed
to be responsible for the contraceptive properties of
breast feeding that are often seen postpartum. In a study
in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, women who
were given a nutrition supplement during pregnancy and
lactation saw a quicker return to pre-pregnancy levels of
prolactin. These findings support that a nutritionally
balanced diet along with a high quality multivitamin may
positively affect fertility postpartum. In addition to
increasing intake of essential nutrients, both caffeine and
alcohol have also been shown to increase prolactin
secretion and as a result, you may advise they be avoided
to enhance fertility.
Weight Management: One of the biggest nutritional
issues related to infertility is weight. In females, being
over or underweight can interfere with ovulation and
directly impair reproductive capabilities. The exact
mechanism by which obesity interferes with fertility is
unclear, but it is believed to be a result of abnormal levels
of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), follicle
stimulating hormone (FSH), and leutinizing hormone
(LH). It appears as if the levels of these hormones become
altered as a result of the abnormal levels of leptin and
insulin which are commonly seen among obese individuals.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome is an example of an
endocrine disorder which is associated with a high BMI
and an anovulatory state.
Research supports that weight loss among obese female
patients experiencing infertility is effective for promoting
healthy conception. In a study published in Human
Reproduction, female subjects with a BMI > 30 who
reported infertility for at least 2 years were placed on a
weight loss program for 6 months. Compliant subjects
lost an average of 10.2 kg (22.4 lbs) and 90% of subjects
who were anovulatory prior to the study began
experiencing spontaneous ovulation. Of the 67 women
who completed the study, 45 (65%) achieved live birth
after successful completion of the weight loss program.
While additional research still needs to be conducted to determine if male fertility is also influenced by weight,
preliminary studies suggest that men with a BMI > 25 are
more likely to be partnered in an infertile couple. Based on
these findings, supporting your patients through a weight
management program can be the first step in treating an
individual or couple who is struggling with infertility.
Likewise underweight females, or those with low body fat
percentage, may experience equal difficulty in trying to
conceive as their overweight counterparts. These patients
can be supported by encouraging a healthy diet that
allows them to maintain a body fat percentage of
19.5-24%.
Healthy Micronutrient Intake:: While balanced intake of
vitamins and minerals is always a part of a healthy diet,
certain nutrients are of particular concern among patients
who are trying to conceive. Women need to be especially
mindful of their intake of folate, calcium, and iron as these nutrients are essential for healthy pregnancy and fetal
development. Zinc is the major nutrient in seminal fluid,
and deficiency is a common cause of low sperm motility
(asthenozoospermia). In clinical trials, zinc therapy has
been shown to support healthy sperm count via reduction
of oxidative stress, sperm DNA fragmentation, and
apoptosis. Taking a high quality zinc supplement along
with antioxidants such as vitamins C and E could be part of
an integrated plan for both men and women.
While deficiency of zinc is commonly associated with
infertility, overabundance of copper is now being
examined as a cause of idiopathic infertility. There are
many believed causes of copper toxicity including birth
control pills, zinc deficiency, and adrenal gland
insufficiency. The adrenal glands are responsible for
signaling the liver to produce ceruloplasmin, the protein
binder of copper. In cases of adrenal insufficiency or
fatigue, copper remains unbound and is not utilized
efficiently in the body resulting in excessive tissue storage.
Disturbances in copper metabolism are linked to abnormal estrogen levels as well as multiple female difficulties
including amenorrhea, premenstrual syndrome, and
miscarriage.
Due to the multiple nutritional influences in fertility, guiding these patients through crucial dietary changes is an important role of natural health practitioners. To support reproductive health, patients should consume a nutrient-rich diet that is high in lean proteins and healthy fats. They should also avoid highly processed foods and those that may be high in contaminants in order to ensure their reproductive health. All patients who are planning to conceive should also consume a high quality multivitamin and essential fatty acid supplement to support a healthy pregnancy and fetal development.

Armour Thyroid Update
You may already be aware that Armour Thyroid is experiencing a national shortage on all strengths. We have recently spoken to Forest Pharmaceuticals and officials have stated that a limited amount of the lower strengths will be available but are not prepared at this time to give a definitive date on fully restocking this medication. During this interim, we are capable of compounding porcine thyroid in the strengths that are need for continued therapy.
The only variance between what we are compounding and Armour is the filler and our product is encapsulated. We are here to help through this time. Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call.

With this in mind, we would be happy to UPS Ground to a work address at no additional cost. Otherwise, it's only an additional $5.00 upgrade to UPS Ground to a home address. Historically, UPS Ground shipments in the metroplex are taking one day for delivery.

The BioCranial System:
Are You Right in the Head?
by Jerrod Wright, DC
Stand or seat yourself in front of a mirror. Familiar view? Now look a bit closer and answer the following questions: Take a close look at the position of each eye is one lower than the other? Does one eye seem smaller than the other? What about your ears? Does one seem lower than the other? Is one further back on your head than the other one? How about when you talk or smile? Do you use one side of your mouth more that the other?
With most of us, irregularities such as these can be seen by anyone, even with the untrained eye. And there are many other indicators of abnormality which can be picked up by the trained professional. This is where the BioCranial System comes in. The research behind this system has lifted the lid on the relationship between anatomy (structure) and physiology (function) in a way that has not been understood before!
Do our cranial bones move? In a word, yes. And so do all of the bones of the spine. These movements are involuntary, are cyclic, and are essential to the body's life processes. It's like a pumping action, a gentle squeezing and releasing, just like you would do with a sponge in water.
BioCranial research has discovered that the spinal alignment follows the alignment of the cranial bones (of which there are 22). The flawed cranial bone alignment results in equally “flawed” spinal alignment. If you craniosacral system (the cranium and the spine as an integrated unit) is out of line, it is because of the cranial distortion. This anatomical (structural) “flaw” will have an impact on the optimum level of function of the involuntary movement of the craniosacral system and thus the entire body.
The BCS has been successfully treating patients in Europe for over a decade now. By addressing the “cause” instead of the symptoms, BioCranial has been able to help many different conditions of which include, but by no means limited to: ADD, asthma, autism, cerebral palsy, chronic fatigue, colic, dyslexia, female disorders, fibromyalgia, frozen shoulder, herniated discs, hiatal hernias, hyperactivity, irritable bowel, knee problems, rotator cuff, sacroiliac disorders, sciatica, skin problems, sports related injuries, tennis elbow, and varicosity.
Who can benefit from the BioCranial System? You can! And just about everyone else, bar none no matter what age. You see, just about every one of us is “injured” as part of the “normal” birthing process, whether we realize it or not. The BCS aims to correct this and therefore allows your body to function optimally. Remember, the absence of symptoms if no indication of the presence of health.
The BioCranial System is all about optimal health and the functionality of the body!
